Artifacts - Discovery
Description:
SUBJECT: A Viking Longship, Christopher Columbus and a mariner’s Octant have been brought together to depict the ages of discovery. The Vikings sailed from Norway to discover Iceland (860 AD) and Greenland (982 AD) and eventually the west coast of Canada; Italian born Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in 1492 in search of India, only to discover the West Indies and Caribbean islands; the Octant, initially designed by Isaac Newton in 1699 but not developed until 1730, was widely used in the 18th century as an aid to navigation.
